We need to protect our children

Children as young as five are prescribed antidepressants at unprecedented rate, despite safety and efficacy concerns

The latest NHS figures show antidepressant prescribing to children has grown steadily over the years to an all-time high in 2020. Trends are similar in other Western countries, including the U.S.

Children are vulnerable to the neurological and developmental effects of psychotropic drug use in ways we have yet to fully understand, including commonly prescribed stimulants for attention and hyperactivity.

Despite the lack of evidence for safety or efficacy, children in the foster care and juvenile justice systems are forced to take psychotropic drugs, often for years, until they exit those systems as adults.

Together we have sponsored independent research into alternative standards and safer, more effective care.

Your donations to Open Excellence support the researchers, educators and care innovators creating a safer world for our most vulnerable children.

We are asking for your support today. Join us to stand in the gap for children in need of safe care and support.

More children than ever need our help now

Open Excellence board member and international youth advocate Giovan Bazan speaks powerfully of his own experience as a survivor of forced drugging and as a witness to childhood friends who did not survive:

“I joined the Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care because I know what it’s like living with a mental health challenge. I spent my childhood and teenage years growing up in the foster care and the juvenile justice systems. I experienced a lot of adversity, from losing my loving foster mother, to being physically and sexually abused, to lacking family support and stability. At six years old, I was diagnosed “mentally ill” and I was forced to take medications until I became an adult and elected to come off all of them.

My story is not unique. Over one third of all foster children in the United States are diagnosed and prescribed psychotropic medications.

Everyone deserves the chance to find their own path of recovery that is both safe and effective. Now is the time for action. We can and we must make the world a better place for the kids who are suffering now.

Together, let’s support the Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care and bring the truth, respect and expectation of recovery to all of mental health. We can do this.”

Donations to Open Excellence support research and education that are making mental health care safer for our children. Please give today to keep this life-changing work going in 2022.
